It’s Vigo here with my serious face on (yes, we have those too). Easter means chocolate everywhere — and for us dogs, that’s a real danger, not a treat. Here’s how to keep your pup safe while the humans hunt for eggs.
The big one: chocolate is toxic to dogs — it contains theobromine, which we can’t process. Dark and cooking chocolate are the most dangerous. Keep every egg, bar and box well out of reach.
Other Easter dangers
- Hot cross buns & simnel cake — raisins and sultanas can cause kidney failure in dogs, even in small amounts.
- Xylitol — this sweetener (in some sweets and baking) is extremely toxic to dogs.
- Foil & plastic wrappers — a tempting sniff that can cause a nasty blockage.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, a racing heart, tremors or seizures. If you think your dog has eaten chocolate or anything on this list, call your vet immediately — don’t wait for symptoms. The sooner they’re seen, the better.
Keep the zoomies safe
The best distraction from the chocolate stash is a good walk! Whether it’s a group adventure or a calm solo stroll, a tired dog is a happy (and safe) dog. Away over the Easter break? Our pet sitting and drop-in visits keep your pup company and out of mischief.
