The Best Dog Walks in Didsbury — The Dog Walkers, South Manchester

Didsbury (M20) is one of the best corners of South Manchester for dog owners — within a short walk you’ve got botanical gardens, ancient woodland, open river meadows and proper community parks. Whether your dog wants a gentle on-lead stroll or a muddy off-lead adventure, here are our favourite Didsbury dog walks and how to make the most of each one.

The short answer: The best dog walks in Didsbury are Fletcher Moss & Stenner Woods, the Didsbury Flood Basin and Mersey meadows, Fog Lane Park and the riverside Mersey Valley trail. Fletcher Moss is the standout — gardens flowing into woodland and water meadows.

Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens & Stenner Woods

This is the jewel of Didsbury. The formal botanical gardens (keep dogs on a lead here and clean up) open out into Stenner Woods and the Mersey water meadows, where there’s space for a happy off-lead explore where it’s safe. It’s beautiful year-round, though it gets properly muddy after rain — exactly the kind of walk our “Clean Dog Promise” towel-dry was made for. Parking is on Millgate Lane and Stenner Lane.

The Didsbury Flood Basin & Mersey meadows

Just across the river by Simon’s Bridge, the flood basin is a wide expanse of open meadow alongside the River Mersey — popular with local dog walkers for good reason. Big skies, plenty of room, and easy flat going. It can flood in winter (the clue’s in the name), so check the conditions before you set off.

Fog Lane Park

If you want something tidier and more contained, Fog Lane Park is a well-kept community park with paths, open grass and a café. It’s ideal for a steady, sociable on-lead walk, for older dogs, or for days when the river meadows are under water.

The Mersey Valley riverside trail

For a longer outing, the riverside trail along the Mersey links Didsbury with Chorlton and Northenden — miles of flat, scenic walking you can make as short or long as you like. It’s our go-to when a dog needs to burn real energy without leaving South Manchester.

A few local tips

  • Weekends and sunny evenings get busy at Fletcher Moss — early mornings are calmest for reactive dogs.
  • The Mersey meadows flood in winter; stick to Fog Lane Park or the higher paths when the river’s high.
  • Recall near the river matters — if your dog’s recall is still developing, keep them on a long line.
  • Always take more poo bags than you think you need, and bag the lot.
