How Long to Walk a Puppy — The Dog Walkers, South Manchester

New puppy, and not sure how far is too far? The simplest guide is the 5-minute rule — and getting it wrong in either direction matters more than people think. Here’s how long to walk a puppy by age, and what counts just as much as the minutes.

The short answer

A widely used vet guideline is roughly five minutes of formal walking per month of age, up to twice a day. So a 3-month-old puppy might manage two 15-minute walks; a 5-month-old, two 25-minute walks. It’s a guide, not a law — but it’s a sensible ceiling while joints are still forming.

Why over-walking a puppy is risky

Puppies have soft growth plates that don’t close until anywhere from 8 to 18 months depending on breed and size. Too much forced, repetitive exercise — long road walks, endless ball-throwing, stairs — can stress developing joints and is linked to later problems, especially in larger breeds. The Kennel Club and your own vet are the best sources for breed-specific advice.

A rough guide by age

  • 8–10 weeks: garden pottering and play; no formal walks yet.
  • 3 months: ~15 minutes, twice a day.
  • 4 months: ~20 minutes, twice a day.
  • 6 months: ~30 minutes, twice a day.

Free play and sniffing in the garden don’t count toward the limit — it’s repetitive, on-lead road walking that you cap.

It’s not just about distance

A puppy’s brain tires faster than its legs. Ten minutes of sniffing, gentle exploring and meeting the world calmly is worth more than a forced march — and it ties straight into puppy socialisation, which is arguably the most important job of all in the first few months.

When can a puppy join group walks?

Until your puppy is fully vaccinated and a bit older, stick to short, controlled outings — which is exactly what our one-to-one puppy walks and quick home visits are for. Once they’re ready, sociable group dog walking is a brilliant outlet. Written by Daz of The Dog Walkers, covering Wythenshawe & South Manchester. Book a free meet & greet.
