Chorlton (M21) is dog-walking heaven. Tucked between Beech Road’s cafés and the River Mersey, you’ve got a lake, a proper nature reserve and miles of meadow and riverside path — all within a few minutes of each other. Here are our favourite Chorlton dog walks and how to get the best out of each.
Chorlton Water Park
A 26-acre former gravel pit turned local nature reserve, Chorlton Water Park is the area’s go-to walk: a big lake circled by easy, level paths, with meadow and woodland around the edges. Brilliant for a steady loop, sociable for dogs, and popular — so it’s a great place for confident dogs and a calmer early start for nervous ones.
Chorlton Ees & Ivy Green
This Local Nature Reserve is the wilder, woodier side of Chorlton — old woodland, scrub and meadow running down to the Mersey, with quieter trails where dogs can really use their noses. It connects straight onto the river path, so you can easily extend a walk. Recall matters here as it opens onto the river.
The Mersey valley & Chorlton Meadows
The riverside path along the Mersey gives you long, flat, scenic walking that links Chorlton with Didsbury and Northenden. Chorlton Meadows and Hardy Farm add big open green space right beside it. It’s our pick when a high-energy dog needs a proper stretch of the legs.
A few local tips
- Chorlton Water Park’s car park fills early on sunny weekends — go early or walk in from Beech Road.
- The Mersey meadows get muddy and can flood after heavy rain; the Water Park paths stay more reliable.
- Keep recall solid near the river and the lake edges.
- Plenty of dog-friendly cafés around Beech Road for afterwards — bring a towel for muddy paws.
