The Best Dog Walks in Sale — The Dog Walkers, South Manchester

Sale (M33) might be best known for Sale Water Park, but there’s far more here for dogs than one lake. Between the Mersey valley, the Bridgewater Canal and a couple of lovely formal gardens, you can mix big open adventures with gentle on-lead strolls all week. Here are our favourite Sale dog walks.

The short answer: The best dog walks in Sale are Sale Water Park, the Bridgewater Canal towpath, Walkden Gardens and Worthington Park. Sale Water Park is the headline — 152 acres of lake, meadow and riverside on the edge of the Mersey valley.

Sale Water Park

The big one: 152 acres of lake, meadow and riverbank on the Trafford borderline, part of the wider Mersey Valley. Flat, accessible paths make it a reliable all-weather walk, and it connects along the Mersey to Chorlton Water Park if you fancy a longer loop. Busy with walkers and watersports, so a calm early start suits more nervous dogs.

The Bridgewater Canal towpath

Running right through Sale, the Bridgewater Canal towpath is a brilliant flat, straightforward walk you can pick up and follow as far as you like — great for steady-paced dogs and easy underfoot year-round. Keep dogs to heel near the water’s edge and watch for cyclists.

Walkden Gardens

A hidden gem: a beautifully kept series of ornamental garden “rooms” with hedged paths and quiet corners. Dogs on leads here, and it’s perfect for a gentle, calm walk — ideal for older dogs or a relaxed potter rather than a big run.

Worthington Park

A restored Victorian park in the heart of Sale, with paths, lawns and mature trees. It’s a tidy, contained option for a short, sociable on-lead walk close to the town centre.

A few local tips

  • Sale Water Park’s car parks get busy on warm weekends — early mornings are calmest.
  • The Mersey-side paths can flood after heavy rain; the canal towpath and the gardens stay reliable.
  • Keep recall tight near the lake and canal edges.
  • Towel at the ready — the water park gets muddy, and our “Clean Dog Promise” means dogs come home dry.
